Catalina Bison

Bison have been present on Catalina Island for close to a century. They were brought to the Island in 1924 to star in a movie, a movie they never appeared in. Ultimately, the herd grew to more than 600 animals, but the population is now limited to 150. The island’s bison herd is maintained and monitored by the Catalina Island Conservancy. Although the bison are not native to the island, they play an important role in the cultural fabric of Catalina. Therefore, the Conservancy has no plans to remove the animals from the island.
