Full Moon Over Avalon
August 10, 2014 gave us the opportunity to view the full moon at the closest perigee (approach to the earth) this year, a relatively close encounter of only 221,765 miles from Earth.
Steve Garrett is a native born Californian. Steve and his wife Marge live in Arcadia, California. Their five grown children have all moved on to college and careers of their own. They now enjoy spoiling their eight grandchildren. A graduate of Temple City High School (class of 1963) he studied at Pasadena City College and the University of Colorado. While attending High School Steve was the school newspaper and Yearbook photographer. He also worked part time as a photographer’s assistant for Larry Bartlett at the Alhambra based Post Advocate newspaper. This began a lifelong interest in photography. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Steve served in the Republic of Vietnam during 1966. Steve Garrett was employed by Hollister-Stier Laboratories from 1969-1972 as a Professional Service Representative; one part biologist, one part salesman and one part customer service representative. He was associated with The Mission Viejo Company as a real estate salesman for eight months in 1972. He joined Merrill Lynch in December of 1972. He served as a financial consultant in the Pasadena, Los Angeles, and San Marino office. Steve was the Resident Manager in the San Marino, California office from 1983 to 1987. Steve established Steve Garrett and Associates, Inc. a Registered Investment Advisor and investment brokerage firm in 1990 which invests and manages money for individuals and small corporate retirement plans. On several occasions over the past 23 years Steve has been called upon to act as an expert witness before FINRA arbitration panels. Steve is a founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Guided Discoveries,a public benefit, 501(c)3, Corporation which operates Catalina Island Marine Institute, AstroCamp and the Tole Mour tall ship. In 1991, Steve served as the Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Elliott-Pope Preparatory School, restructuring the nearly bankrupt private school and successfully merging it with Guided Discoveries. As a 25-year volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, Steve served in numerous capacities from Scoutmaster to Vice-Chairman of the San Gabriel Valley Council. In 1983, he was honored by the Council as a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Steve was the District 5300 Governor of Rotary International in 1994-1995 and is currently a member of the Rotary Club of San Marino, California.
