The Bison on Catalina Island were imported in 1924 for the silent movie version of Zane Grey’s, The Vanishing American. Even though the bison never appeared in the film they remained on the island to grow into a herd of several hundred animals. Today, the island’s bison herd is maintained and monitored by the Catalina Island Conservancy. and has been reduced to approximately 150 animals.
